A pensioner was seriously hurt in a crash involving four cars in Canterbury yesterday evening.

The 73-year-old was airlifted to hospital after the pile-up near the Hare and Hounds pub in Tile Kiln Hill, Blean.

It involved a Vauxhall, a 4x4 and two Peugeots, but it is not yet known how the smash happened.

Police and ambulance crews were called at 5.20pm and officers closed the road for nearly four hours while the cars were recovered and the crash investigated.

The man, who was the only person hurt, was initially thought to have suffered minor injuries - but his condition worsened and the air ambulance was called.

He was taken to the specialist trauma unit at St George's Hospital in London with serious abdominal and leg injuries.

The road was fully reopen by 9pm.
