Fireworks, bonfires and November 5 may mean fun for most people. But for hedgehogs it could mean an untimely death.

The Canterbury and District Branch of the RSPCA is asking people to think of the spiney creatures for whom a newly built bonfire could look like a perfect hibernation spot.

“We are asking people to move their bonfires before lighting them, or to put chicken wire or other mesh around them to stop hedgehogs and dormice getting in and making a home,” said Claire Butler, branch secretary.

Hedgehogs need to weigh around 600g to hibernate safely. Claire added: “Hedgehogs out during the day could be unwell but they could just be hungry. If you think they are just hungry you can offer them some food.”

Hedgehogs eat tinned dog or cat food (not fish-based) mixed with cereal such as Weetabix, bran or wholemeal bread. They will also eat cooked potatoes, raw mince and some fruits.
