Shepherd Neame has announced plans for more than 60 houses in the heart of Faversham’s countryside.
Plans were unveiled at a meeting between town councillors and brewery representatives on Monday for 63 houses near the bend in Brogdale Road.
They have not yet applied for planning permission.
Town councillors David Simmons, Cindy Davis, Trevor Payne, Anita Walker and Shiel Campbell listened to Shepherd Neame announce the plans at the Guildhall.
Rules prevent councillors to say whether they agree with the plans until the application is made but Cllr Davis said: “There is a town council policy to recommend refusal of any large-scale development south of the A2.”
Cllr Payne said: “This proposal would appear to be contrary to existing town council policy. There may be potential traffic issues as well.”
KCC Highways do not view new housing along the Brogdale Road as an issue.
Swale Borough Council’s Bearing Fruits 2031 plan promises to protect Faversham’s countryside.
It says it will ‘protect and enhance the diversity, character and appearance of the area’s historic assets including the small-scale and compact urban form and setting to the town, strongly defined by surrounding countryside and its position standing next to the A2.”
Shepherd Neame property and tenanted trade director George Barnes said: “We attended a meeting with Faversham Town Council to present our proposal for 63 homes on land at Brogdale Road, Faversham, owned by Shepherd Neame.
“We intend to submit a planning application by the end of December.”
