A popular cafe has been forced to shut for good due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The owners of the Espression Arts Cafe in Palace Street, Canterbury, announced the closure on Facebook, posting: “Lockdown has proved too much for us!”

The cafe had become an arts hub for the community, including for vulnerable people encouraged to join in painting pottery or creating mosaics while enjoying tea, coffee and cakes.

Since 2009 it had been run by Catherine Arnell and her partner Jean Rosette, who expanded its remit, working with the elderly and schools, earning them two KM Charity awards

“Obviously, we are very disappointed to have to close but it has just not be possible to operate under the social distancing rules,” said Catherine.

“Having a premises like that is a financial responsibility and obviously we have not had the income.

“It’s sad for our many users and volunteers but we are not going away and will continue our arts work in the community.”

Catherine and Jean say new opportunities now lie ahead with the community interest company, Espression Arts they set up in 2017, and will organise small pop-up sessions in different venues around the city.

“It’s a new start for us, and in these times when people can feel isolated and lonely, it’s even more important for mental health, “ she said.
