Aldi will close its supermarket in Canterbury next week but Waitrose has revealed it is taking over the site in St George's Place.

The company, which is owned by the John Lewis Partnership, is promising a huge jobs boost and a new 25,000 sq ft store.

It has applied for planning permission to include the floor space previously occupied by Bugsy's Ice 'n' Bowl and the upper floor for its offices.

The building will undergo a multi-million refurbishment and is a boost to the area which has recently been blighted by the loss of Netto, Bamboo Tiger, Plant Lazer, Studio 41 and the bowling centre and ice rink.

Waitrose say they have been keen have a store in Canterbury for many years but had not been able to find the right location.
