Skipper Michael Farrer says the city’s hockey club has ‘a buzz’ about it with the men’s and women’s sides sitting at the top of their respective tables.

Farrer’s side continued their superb start to the National Premier Division season with a 4-2 win at champions Reading on Sunday to move joint-top of the table with four wins and 12 points from five games.

The captain said: "It has been an excellent start. We are enjoying looking at the table but, of course, there is still a long way to go.

"We have, however, put ourselves in a great position to go on and have a successful season."

He added: "At the start of any season you look at the away games at Beeston, Surbiton, Reading and East Grinstead as the four hardest of the season.

"Well, we lost convincingly at Beeston but we’ve won at Reading and Surbiton and with the way that we’re playing, hopefully we can get a result at East Grinstead too in a couple of weeks.

"Confidence is high at the moment and we feel we can get a result against anyone."

First up, Canterbury host fifth-placed Hampstead & Westminster at 12.45pm on Sunday and Farrer admitted: "They have traditionally been a bogey-team for us, so it will be a test.

"They are one of those teams that you look at the table and might expect to beat on paper but we never seem to. It will be a good test of where we are.

"The club is a happy place to be at the moment. The old buzz is back and when people are enjoying their hockey, then it makes things even easier."
