Canterbury Hockey Club’s under-16 boys have been crowned national indoor champions.

In their opening group game in Wolverhampton, goals from Harry Roberts (2), Will Elgar and Arion Alexopoulos earned them a 4-1 win over Cannock.

In the second group match against Ashmoor, they lost 4-2. Roberts and Sarosh Sethna were on target.

Canterbury proved too strong for City of York, winning 7-1 with goals from Isaac O’Connor, Sarosh Sethna, Alexopoulos (2) and a hat-trick from Roberts.

Canterbury then booked their place in the semi-finals with a 3-2 win over Peterborough. Alexopoulos netted two more with the other coming from Sethna.

The semi-final against Team Bath Buccaneers saw Canterbury go 3-0 ahead at half-time through O’Connor (2) and Roberts. Two more goals from O’Connor followed after the break and, although Bath pulled three goals back, Canterbury hung on to win 5-3.

The final against Ashmoor saw Elgar put Canterbury ahead in the second half with Alexopoulos adding a second.

Ashmoor pulled one back through a penalty stroke late on but the city youngsters held on for victory.
