It’s the must-read newspaper for Canterbury and can trace its history back to 1717.
So it’s no surprise the Kentish Gazette has been chosen to represent Fleet Street on the brand new Canterbury Monopoly board, which hits shop shelves next month.
Choosing the country’s second oldest surviving newspaper was a no-brainer according to Graham Barnes, from makers Winning Moves UK, which is producing this unique board under official licence from Monopoly owners Hasbro.
He said: “In the finest traditions of journalism, the team at the Kentish Gazette heard about this even though we weren’t going to reveal their paper is even on the board or its location until next month’s launch.
“We are delighted the Gazette is set take over the Fleet Street site, which is the traditional and now spiritual home of the UK newspaper industry.
“The formal announcement will be made at next month’s launch.”
A total of 22 Canterbury landmarks will be announced next month at a red carpet launch in the city.
Mr Barnes said: “There will be an overwhelming number of Canterbury features on the new board.
“As well as the 22 Canterbury locations taking up residence on the famous London Monopoly streets, many of the chance and community chest playing cards are being customised too.
“One inflicts a fine for mucking about on The Ducking Stool. Another advances you to Canterbury’s Mayfair - which we reckon could be any one of three or four of Canterbury finest crown jewels.”
The new Monopoly Canterbury Edition will be available at all leading stores, including Fenwick, Waitrose, Waterstones, WH Smith and The Works – as well as extensively online, including Amazon.
