A late try helped Canterbury to a 31-24 win at Ampthill as the National League 3 London & South East leaders were pushed all the way on Saturday before extending their unbeaten run to 10 games.

This was Canterbury's hardest earned victory of the season and in the end their superior fitness told as they came from 12 points behind to score 26 points after the break.

Ampthill took the lead with a try but Canterbury pulled level when Martyn Beaumont made the most of Paul Brown's long pass to dive in at the corner.

However, Ampthill were 12-5 ahead at half-time following a converted try and a third touchdown two minutes after the break made it 17-5.

Tries from Peter Kelly and Brown, the second of which was converted, brought the scores level but Canterbury then allowed Ampthill to move ahead again by throwing a loose pass which ended in a converted try.

Canterbury came back again with a try from Ricky Mackintosh which was converted by Best to make the score 24-24.

The winning try came was the result of patient build-up as Best's inside flick to Kelly saw the flanker and stand-in captain through an inviting gap. A third conversion from Best completed the scoring.
