Canterbury on the charge against Redruth Picture: Chris Davey
Canterbury produced one of their best displays of the National 2 South season with a 20-12 win over title-chasing Redruth at Merton Lane on Saturday.
The city club made light of the wind and rain and seized the initiative with a try inside two minutes and then held their lead for the remainder of the match.
A break by centre David Devlin-Jones, finished off behind the posts by Kwaku Asiedu and converted by Scott Browne, gave Canterbury the perfect start.
The Canterbury pack bossed their opponents and it was their work which led to the second score when they disrupted a scrum close to the visitors’ line, pounced on the ball and drove prop Jim Green over the line.
The 12-0 lead after 25 minutes came against the wind but the third-placed visitors eventually made the most of their advantage when the league’s leading scorer Tom Duncan touched down, although the conversion was missed.
The decisive blow came shortly after half-time when Canterbury piled on the pressure from the restart and some slick passing allowed Wim Baars to go over for a 17-5 lead.
The visitors toiled away, playing up the hill, but it took them until the final 20 minutes to reduce the deficit when wing Frazer Kellythorn crossed and Paul Thirlby’s conversion made it 17-12.
A flare-up saw Jesse Liston and Redruth’s Greg Goodfellow sent off, while Browne was sin-binned for the closing stages, shortly after kicking a decisive penalty to seal the win.
The win saw Canterbury stay eighth with five games to go.
