Canterbury’s precarious grip on National League 2 South status loosened a little further with another defeat, this time to a Newbury side which had not won a game all season.
A last-minute try earned the city club a bonus point, preserving the 11-point cushion which separates them from the relegation places, but on current form, there are no guarantees.
The 24-19 victory was the home side's first win of the season after 17 consecutive league defeats.
For a side which was superior at the set scrums and, for much of the time, enjoyed a tidy lineout return it was a dispiriting afternoon, not helped by two sin binnings – to Jim Green and Jimmy Stanford – which were punished by Newbury scores.
Canterbury’s tries came from Peter Kelly (2) and Mike Melford (pictured).
