A poor display saw Canterbury beaten 12-11 away at Lydney in National 2 South on Saturday.
In a low quality affair, it was really a question of which of the sides was the poorer.
What separated them at the final whistle was the accurate goal kicking of Lydney full-back Brett Turner who punished the city side with four long-range penalty goals.
Tom Best kicked a couple in reply and Canterbury scored the only try but failed to capitalise on an improved second half showing when Lydney barely threatened their line.
Canterbury were 9-6 down at half-time but the second half found the city club with a fresh impetus and an early break by Jack Davis only just failed to break the deadlock.
Turner made it 12-6 before Canterbury gave themselves hope with the only try in the 57th minute when Matt Sheen touched down.
A last chance went begging five metres from the home line and while the losing bonus point ensured Canterbury did not come away empty-handed, they had plenty of reasons to be disappointed with themselves.
