Train services were halted after a car smashed through the barriers at a level crossing.
A Range Rover was seen driving into them in Chartham at around 7.45pm.
Witnesses say the driver then got out and ran off.
At least one car belonging to a nearby resident was also damaged in the crash.
Six police cars and a National Rail Response Unit vehicle are at the scene.
The rail company confirmed on its website: "A road vehicle has damaged a level crossing near Chartham, blocking both lines between Ashford International and Canterbury West.
"Trains may be cancelled, delayed or revised."
British Transport Police are also at the scene and a search is underway to find the driver and other occupants of the Range Rover.
