A cathedral bell will toll for the final time for coronavirus victims and frontline workers amid calls for the final Clap for Carers.

Canterbury Cathedral announced the decision today amid comments made by the organiser of the weekly event - who said she thinks tonight's applause should be the last.

The old bell on its central tower - known as Bell Harry - rang for two minutes at 8pm each evening.

It was both in remembrance of each day’s coronavirus victims around the world, and in celebration of the bravery of frontline healthcare staff and other essential workers in the UK and internationally.

People up and down the UK first took to their doorsteps and windows on March 26.

But the woman behind the clap, Annemarie Plas, has now suggested tonight's clap should be the last.

The Dutch national living in south London says she has been "overwhelmed" by the support for the ritual, but that it would be best to end it "at its peak".

Bell Harry will toll for the final time at 8pm tonight.

But people have been reassured prayers will still be made for frontline workers and all those affected by the coronavirus.
