Five treated for hypothermia after falling from canoe in River Stour, Canterbury

Three children and two men have been treated for hypothermia after falling from a canoe.

Kent Fire and Rescue crews were called to reports of a group stranded on an island in the middle of the River Stour near Canterbury, after falling into the water.

Two fire engines rushed to the scene just after 6.30pm, and crews were able to pull the five to safety.

They were treated for signs of hypothermia, and were placed in the care of South East Coast Ambulance Service paramedics.

The incident has prompted firefighters to issue the following safety warning to people using the county's waterways and lakes: "Always make sure you are all confident on and in the water.

"Avoid stretches of water that are unfamiliar. If you fall in the water, float on your back and stay calm."
