School children joined war veterans around the war memorial in Canterbury’s Buttermarket on Armistice Day for a service of remembrance to mark the 90th anniversary of the end of the First World War.

They were from the Diocesan and Payne Smith School in the city and had made their own wreaths which were laid by 10-year-olds Chloe Maune and Dillon Stanley.

They were chosen because both their fathers are soldiers who have just returned to Canterbury from Afghanistan with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.

The service was led by the chaplain to the Canterbury branch of the Royal British Legion, the Rev Paul Kerr, and a large crowd observed two minutes silence at 11am.
