A pensioner was left with cuts and grazes after being robbed as he sat on a bench in Canterbury.
It is said to have happened in Palace Street after the victim in his 70s was approached by a man who asked to borrow his lighter.
The pensioner told police that the man dropped the lighter, but as he bent down to pick it up, the thief snatched cash from the victim's shirt pocket.
He says a struggle took place in which he was injured before the robber ran off with the money.
It happened around 1pm on Friday, and the thief is said to be aged between 30 and 40 and was wearing a beige hooded jacket and blue jeans.
Police have now issued an appeal to find the robber.
Detective Constable Colin Glover said: "The victim called out for help during the incident so we are aware there were a number of people who may have seen the incident and tried to stop the suspect.
"It's important we speak to these people as they may have information which could help our investigation."
