KENT’S close-season signing Michael Carberry tormented his former club Surrey by cracking an impressive, unbeaten 84 to help his new county to a 21-run win.

Carberry, 22, who signed a two-year deal to come to St Lawrence back in January, showed all the class that won him England Under-19 honours with 11 fours and a brace of sixes in his 81-ball stay.

Though diminished slightly by a very short boundary on the Ames-Levett side of the ground, it was an innings of real style and character from Carberry against an attack he knows well.

Despite having spent three years on The Oval staff, Carberry happily put his old friends, including internationals Alex Tudor, Jimmy Ormond and Ian Salisbury to the sword as Kent posted a massive 45-over total of 324 for seven.

Skipper David Fulton anchored the innings with 89 off 92 balls while Mark Ealham, playing for the first time in his new role as limited overs’ pinch-hitter, revelled with 75 in quick-time.

Ormond and Rikki Clarke bagged two wickets apiece for the 2002 county champions, but Kent knew they had a winning total.

To their credit star-studded Surrey made a great first of the run chase with Test batsmen Mark Butcher (69), Graham Thorpe (77) and Ali Brown (51) all contributing to the run glut.

But Amjad Khan, who came on as first change, became the pick of the day’s bowlers with four for 52 as Surrey were restricted to 303 all out.

Martin Saggers picked up two for 84 while Ealham and Alamgir Sheriyar claimed one apiece as Kent took their unbeaten pre-season run to three games.

Fulton said afterwards: “I was not at my most fluent today but I hung in there. Then Michael showed us all what he can do today and played very well indeed.

“What pleased me most was that the guys all kept going. It was cold out that and quite hairy in the field, but the bowlers all performed decently and we deserved the win.

“I didn’t give Amjad the new ball quite deliberately and it did seem to fire him up after Alamgir Sheriyar had bowled well first up. Over all the options were good for me and the things we tried all seemed to work out well.”
