New arrival Mitchell Claydon hopes to make an immediate impact at Kent to ensure his loan stay from Durham lasts more than a month.

The Australian-born fast bowler arrived on Monday and replaced Matt Coles in the team for the LV= County Championship Division 2 clash with Glamorgan which began in Canterbury on Wednesday.

The 30-year-old – who has a British passport – first joined Yorkshire in 2005 but after an injury-plagued spell, signed for Durham in 2007 where he helped win the championship the following year.

Despite scoring 84 runs and taking seven wickets in his last two appearances for Durham 2nds, he admitted: “I was doing well in the seconds but I couldn’t get picked for the firsts.

“I asked about the possibility of going on the loan sheet to get some first-team cricket and from there it all happened quickly.

“Kent was somewhere I was keen to go as I know a couple of people here and it seemed like a place where I can make an impact on the field.

“It’s an opportunity to play some first-class cricket. I am ready to
go as I have 250 overs under my belt already this season and hopefully
I can be successful here.

“I have had plenty of responsibility in all forms of the game and hopefully I will be able to pass on some of my experience to the young players at Kent.

"Hopefully, I’ll get the chance to show what I can do over the coming weeks.
“I know the date on the agreement says July 10 but hopefully I’ll be
successful and will be here longer than that.”

Despite joining a team without a win in Division 2 from the opening
seven games, Claydon added: “I have never played a game outside of
Division 1 before but I know in the top division it’s so tight that
one or two wins will get you right in the mix and it’s the same here.”
