Councillors will discuss proposals to close Herne Bay and Whitstable museums during the winter to save costs.

The council wants to introduce seasonal opening hours from January next year for both coastal towns based on an analysis of visitor numbers and income.

It means both museums could open four days a week from Thursday to Sunday from April to the end of September.

Council bosses estimate it could save £65,000 in the first year with more savings expected over the next three.

Figures show the total amount of visitors to Herne Bay Museum in 2011 and 2012 was 12,422 compared to Whitstable's 23,343.

A council report, available on the authority's website, reads: "Canterbury district, when compared to many other districts of a similar size, has an extensive museums service reflecting the important role that heritage plays in the district.

"However, running five museums with the current budget and staffing resource is challenging.

"Operationally, the buildings are run on a very tight budget, with minimum staffing complements in place supported by volunteers where appropriate.

"Therefore, as an alternative to seasonal opening, any alternative savings would need to be made from museums development budgets."

Proposed changes to museum opening hours are due to be discussed at the council's overview meeting on Wednesday at 7pm.
