Canterbury College has sensationally announced it is scrapping its IT Academy and warned staff they face redundancy.
The news follows its confirmation last week that it will definitely axe its entire A-Level provision.
College bosses say 18 students currently mid-way through their IT studies will be allowed to complete their final year next year.
But six staff members have been notified that their "jobs are at risk".
Last month the Kentish Gazette newspaper revealed that he college was planning to scrap its A-Level courses to plug a massive hole in its finances.
Nearly 100 students are affected, though those who had started courses were subsequently promised they could finish their studies if they could not find suitable alternatives at other schools or colleges.
College bosses have now confirmed that the closure would definitely happen.
But today's news comes as a further blow to staff and students.
Alison Clarke, principal of Canterbury College, said: “Unlike our other courses, IT has consistently struggled to meet national targets and standards of achievement.
"A key part of the rationale for the closer ties between ourselves and East Kent College is to play to our respective strengths for the long-term benefit of our students and economy.
“Although we will no longer offer vocational IT courses at Canterbury, a broader range are on offer at East Kent College in Broadstairs and Dover, and also via Mid Kent College in Maidstone and Medway.”
Each of the students who have applied to start courses at the IT Academy in September has been notified of the decision.
They are being offered one-to-one advice and guidance sessions, and, where appropriate, an alternative course, says the college.
Applicants can call 01227 811188 or email: IAG@canterburycollege.ac.uk to make an appointment or discuss options.
The College’s website also provides full details of alternative programmes of study at www.canterburycollege.ac.uk through which it is possible to apply on-line.
