Canterbury hotel run by councillor set to open in high street

A boutique hotel offering a “new concept for Canterbury” will open in the city’s high street next week.

The Hugo will launch next Friday (June 15) above Dodgems and Floss in St Peter’s Street.

Owner Ben Fitter-Harding – a Conservative city councillor – has spent £100,000 converting two flats into what will be a hotel apartment, two rooms and a junior suite.

But unlike a standard hotel, it will have no reception or bar, with guests accessing their rooms through a door on the high street using a code and keypad.

“There is definitely a need for good, quality accommodation in Canterbury,” Cllr Fitter-Harding said.

“It needs to be in the right place and we’re right on St Peter’s Street, which is an awesome place to be able to stay.

“You basically walk out of your room and onto the high street, so we don’t need to duplicate a bar, or a restaurant, or any of that stuff.

"The city has it all. There’s so much to see and do in Canterbury.People travel here from all over the world and want to live it, and experience it, and sometimes you don’t get that in a big hotel.

“We’ll be far more integrated.”

Cllr Fitter-Harding won permission for the conversion in March, when the application for change of use went before the authority’s planning committee to avoid any conflict of interest.

All rooms will be fitted out in a contemporary style by Canterbury furniture store BoConcept, which has a shop in Orange Street.

Rooms will start at £59 per night.
