Danny Vaughan has admitted he was left shocked by the news he was being sacked as Canterbury Rugby Club head coach.
He was replaced this week by long-serving city club player Andy Pratt following Canterbury's relegation from National 2 South on May 7.
But Vaughan, in charge at Merton Lane for the past seven years, insisted: "I just didn’t see it coming and I was completely dumbfounded and bewildered when I was told. I am disappointed."
The former Blackheath player, who led Canterbury to four Kent Cup triumphs and one promotion, said: "It’s been a fantastic journey and it’s just a pity that it has ended like this."
Club chairman Giles Hilton said: "I want to thank Danny for all his work during the seven-year period which has been the most successful period in the club’s history.
"However, it was felt that change was needed to guide the club into the next era. To take us there we feel we have the right man in Andy."
Pratt, 34, a product of the club’s junior system, is also regional development officer for the RFU.
He said: "I am pleased to be appointed Canterbury head coach but there are also some mixed emotions as well because Danny and I are pretty close.
"I’m sure if I ever need any advice then I will be able to pick up the phone to him."
Backs coach Tim McBennett is also leaving the club.
