The family of a Ghurka soldier who faced deportation after he was killed in Afghanistan have now been told by the Home Office that they can stay in the UK indefinitely.

The Gazette reported exclusively on the case of Uma Dura, the widow of Col Sgt Krishna Dura, who lived at Sobraon Way near Howe Barracks in Canterbury.

Campaigners have been trying to persuade the Government to lift the threat hanging over her and her two young daughters, Kristina and Kebina.who attend local schools.

Among them fighting her case was Canterbury MP Julian Brazier who said he had been reassured the family can now stay in Britain indefinately.

That will give them extra reassurance because they had been previously been told their status would have to be reviewed in 2012.

Col Sgt Dura of the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Gurka Rifles was killed in January when the vehicle he was travelling in was blown up.
