DISAPPOINTED organisers of an open day at Kent University blamed soaring temperatures as one of the reasons for a low turnout. Just over 1,000 attended, well down on last year's figure.
Temperatures rising to 28 degrees are thought to have kept kept many of the prospective students away from the tours of the campus accommodation, study facilities and nightlife.
A higher education fair in April which attracted over 6,000 people and AS level exams in progress were also reasons for the poor turnout.
However, those who did attend the open day seemed impressed with the variety of degree programmes on offer and the friendly atmosphere of the university. Frances Willmott, 17, from Cardiff, said: "It will be one of a number of possibilities for me.
"I do like the campus very much. I hope to do law and am therefore very interested in the law clinic. The accommodation is really nice too."
Green open spaces and a welcoming atmosphere seem to be among the reasons why young people choose Kent University. Jamie Trott, 19, who is studying drama and English and was one of the students welcoming visitors, said: "The reason why I like this university so much is because it is so green."
He stressed: "It is better than I expected it to be. I am involved in lots of societies which is really good fun."
The cost of going to university is an issue with many young people who must take out large loans to fund their way through.
But despite the cost and potential debts university is still a popular option with school leavers.
Craig Curran, 18, studying law, said: "Canterbury is a great city, the people are friendly and the nightlife on campus is excellent. It is easy to make friends as long as you get involved."
