DEMOLITION work has started on the former Netto and Bamboo Tiger shops in St George’s Place.
Workmen have started tearing the building – which was once a Caffyn’s car showroom – down as they prepare to build student accommodation and homes in its place.
Work on the new building is due to be complete in the summer of next year..
The halls will have 206 student rooms and are being built for Christchurch University. There will also be 10 family houses at the back of the development.
The development has prompted a mixed reaction from members of Canterbury City Council’s planning committee.
Some said they liked it and that it free up houses in residential areas from being turned into student homes while others had concerns about the number of students who would be living in the halls when they are finished.
