Drivers and residents have been told to expect disruption and noise while an historic flint wall next to the Westgate Towers is re-built.

The brickwork was taken away when the 12-month traffic scheme to close the towers was introduced in March last year.

When the trial was scrapped in April, residents called for the wall to be re-instated.

Some raised concerns that the delays were because the wall had been lost, but the city council insisted it was being kept in storage.

The county council has since written to residents to inform them of planned road closures while the work to replace it is carried out.

Part of St Dunstan’s Street will be shut between 7pm and 5.45am from Monday, September 30 to Monday, October 7.

During that time, traffic from St Peter’s Place will be unable to reach St Dunstan’s Street or North Lane.

Diversions will be put in place via Rheims Way, London Road and St Dunstan’s Street.

Traffic heading from St Dunstan’s Street into St Peter’s Place will be unaffected, because the towers will remain open for cars to pass through.

KCC’s traffic manager Andrew Westwood said: “The county council is keen to ensure that the disruption is kept to a minimum and will avoid this wherever possible.

“As such, the contractor has been instructed to reduce noise levels wherever possible, although some noise will be inevitable.”
