Driver left ‘dazed’ teenager Lily Knowldin in road after knocking her down in Chartham

A furious mum has branded a driver heartless after her schoolgirl daughter was knocked down by a car and left lying in the road.

Tammy Knowldin says 13-year-old Lily was crossing Shalmsford Street in Chartham when she was struck near the junction with Bolts Hill.

But instead of getting out of the car to check on the injured teenager, the female driver left her “dazed and in pain” in the road.

“Lily tells me she was still on the ground and all the woman did was wind down the window and ask if she was all right before driving off,” Mrs Knowldin said.

“She said she was quite dazed and in pain and just said something like, ‘yeah’. But who would leave a child like that?

“At the very least she should have got out of the car and helped her and called her family.

“It just seemed she was just in too much of a hurry to get on her way.”

The incident happened at about 7.40am as Lily crossed the road to catch a bus to the Spires Academy.

Mum-of-four Mrs Knowldin, who lives in The Hyde, says it is every parent’s worse nightmare to hear their child has been knocked down by a car.

But she believes her daughter’s big schoolbag actually protected her from possibly suffering more serious injuries.

“I took her to the doctor’s surgery first because it was nearby and then later to the hospital,” she said.

“Fortunately, she hasn’t got any broken bones, but she is quite badly bruised and suffered from shock, which made her quite tearful afterwards.

“I called the police and have filled out an accident report form, which I need to take in.

“Hopefully, there might also be some CCTV of the car, which was silver, and we’ve also found witness to what happened.

“I’m just so angry that the driver didn’t show a bit more compassion for Lily, which you might have expected from a woman, who might be a mum herself.”

Police have confirmed the accident was reported on Friday afternoon and that inquiries are ongoing.
