The collision has led to the A2 London-bound being shut from A28 Wincheap to M2 J7.

National Highways has said “due to the nature of the incident” police need to carry out collision investigation work, “with the road expected to remain closed for several hours more”.

In a statement, a Highways spokesman said: “Kent Police, Kent Fire and Rescue Service and South East Coast Ambulance Service are on scene with National Highways Traffic Officers and service providers also in attendance assisting with traffic management.

“Air Ambulance Kent Surrey Sussex landed at scene earlier, but have since left.

“Traffic that has been caught up in within the closure is being turned and released via the rear of the queue by Kent Police, however due to the large amount of traffic this may take some time.”

A Kent Fire and Rescue spokesman said: “We were called to assist Kent Police at this incident, and we sent one fire engine to the scene.”
