Canterbury crash police constable who hit traffic lights in Sturry Road ordered to take more training

A police officer has been ordered to undergo driving training after he smashed a patrol car into a set of traffic lights.

The male PC suffered minor injuries in the crash, which happened in Sturry Road in May.

No details have been released about what caused the accident, but the officer was not responding to a 999 call at the time.

A passing ambulance stopped to help, and paramedics spent an hour at the scene treating the constable.

The police’s serious collision investigation unit was also sent to the scene, and an internal probe was launched.

This week, police confirmed the unnamed officer had been told to receive additional training behind the wheel.

A spokesman said: “An investigation was completed with a recommendation the PC driver received a driver training assessment from within the force.”

The smash caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to the patrol car and wrecked a new traffic light post.
