East Kent Blitz are gearing up for the final of a national basketball competition this weekend.
The Canterbury-based women’s team, formed of players from rival teams in the East Kent League, is up against Camden Panthers in the final of the Founders Cup.
Blitz have already beaten Camden this season but Saturday’s clash, at the Moberly Sports & Education Centre in north-west London, will be a stern test.
The final was scheduled to be played last weekend at the University of East London but bad weather pushed back Camden’s semi-final against Huddersfield. Now the East Kent players face the prospect of what is effectively an away game against a strong Panthers side.
However, having come through back-to-back away games against Leicester and Huddersfield on one weekend earlier the season, they will travel to the capital without fear.
Tony Homersham, who assists Blitz coach Lorraine Dagger, said: "It’s a great achievement by the team. We’re trying to raise the profile of women’s basketball in Kent, we’re trying to get more teams involved and this is one way of doing that."
The Founders Cup has been contested by men’s teams since 1957 but last season was the first time a women’s version had been played.
The competition was set up to give teams outside the National League a chance to perform on the national stage.
Saturday’s final starts at 3pm.
