A Labour candidate for Canterbury City Council has called for people to take violent threats online seriously, after she herself was threatened.

Beginning her election campaign just this week, Amy Licence, who is standing in the Sturry ward, found herself falling victim to abuse on a Facebook group today.

When asking residents with concerns on the public group about crime, traffic, air pollution and housing to contact her as she went canvassing in the area today, a thinly veiled threat was made.

The poster wrote: "I'd hesitate before knocking on doors as you might get knocked out."

They added: "There's no police in Kent or the UK so unfortunately your perpetrator will not be caught."

They also wrote that it was a 'great time to be a stabber'.

The incident has been reported to police.

Ms Licence said: "It's important we take this seriously in the current climate and after the murder of Jo Cox.

"One nasty comment seems to open a Pandora's box of hatred. We are campaigning in unusual times and we're feeling the effect of a national crisis in unprecedented ways."
