Election ceremony for new archbishop

DR ROWAN Wiiliams, the Archbishop of Wales, was becoming the Archbishop of Canterbury today at a ceremony in St Paul's Cathedral in London.

Dr David Hope, the Archbishop of York, is presiding over the formal "confirmation of election" along with eight senior bishops from the Canterbury province.

The legal formality is the second stage in the process of appointing the successor to George Carey who held the post for almost 12 years and stepped down in October.
