A PROUD soldier and a true character.

That was one of the many tributes paid at a memorial service to L Cpl James “Jimmy” Johnson this morning (Friday).

Family, friends and colleagues gathered at All Saints Church, Canterbury, to remember the life of the 30 year old, who died while on duty in Afghanistan in June.

He was killed in a mine explosion during a routine vehicle patrol in Lashkar Gar, Helmand Province and is the first member of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders to die in the conflict.

Around 200 soldiers from The Fifth Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland attended, along with Jimmy’s close friends and family, including fiancee Bernadette Broadley.
