Traffic backed up on the A2 at Barham
A mum from Canterbury was stuck on the A2 for NINE hours last night with an 11-month-old baby and a two-year-old in her car.
Units from the city were sent out to find her and her children - who she was taking to Disneyland – after she pulled over in a layby on the Dover-bound carriageway.
She eventually made it back to Canterbury shortly after 9am this morning.
She was one of many stranded drivers who called police for help after they were caught out by snow blizzards.
The Canterbury district and Faversham has largely avoided the hazardous weather, but some main roads have been affected.
The A2 at Barham is still impassable and closed coastbound because of drifting snow, causing massive tailbacks.
Police were also called to Brenley Corner near Faversham at 9.50am after a two-car smash.
The road was partly blocked and re-opened at 10am.
Acting Chief Inspector Kay Maynard said: ‘We know how difficult it has been for many people who felt stranded in their vehicles.
"We have been trying to get to as many as possible to offer reassurance, as well as deal with the problems on the roads caused by collisions and broken down vehicles.
"The volume of snow and the drifting caused in exposed areas has been a major issue. As soon as roads were cleared and gritted, they were becoming covered in snow again."
Today may bring some light relief: according to the Met Office, the early burst of snow will be replaced with sunny weather, as the winds slowly ease.
Tomorrow is set to see more scattered snow flurries, combined with sunny spells.
