Flood warnings are in place along a 15-mile stretch of low-lying land by the River Stour.

The Environment Agency predicts the river could burst its banks between Sturry, outside Canterbury, and Kennington in Ashford.

Kennington, Wye, Godmersham, Shalmsford Street, Chartham, Thanington, Fordwich and Sturry are the areas of potential concern tonight.

The flood warning came into force at 7.30pm and will remain in place until 7am tomorrow.

The Agency said: "We expect flooding to affect low lying land and roads close to the rivers, particularly on and around the River Great Stour, particularly in and around Thanington, Fordwich and around Canterbury.

"Flooding of properties is not forecast at this point.

"Showers are expected to clear later this evening with a dry spell over the weekend forecast.

"We are closely monitoring the situation. Our incident response staff are liaising with emergency services and our partners and actively monitoring the situation and are prepared to respond if required.

"Be prepared."

River levels are high as a result of recent thunderstorms.
