THE DEAN of Canterbury says he is “deeply moved” by the announcement that he is to receive the Freedom of the City.

It is being awarded to the the Very Rev Robert Willis by the city council for his contribution to enhancing the city’s reputation throughout the county and nationally.

The public ceremony will take place at the Guildhall on Wednesday, May 7.

The Dean joins a worthy roll of Freemen which includes Prince Charles, Lord Carey, Terry Waite, film producer Peter Williams, architect Anthony Swaine, Lord Lieutenant, Allan Willett, and Tim Brett

Speaking after the announcement, the Dean said: “I was filled with pleasure and deeply moved when I heard that I was to receive the Freedom of the City of Canterbury.

“This is a tremendous honour and one which demonstrates the close links between the Cathedral and the city, which I hope will grow stronger.”

The honour of being Freeman historically comes with some bizarre rights.

For example he can:

BLOB Drive his sheep through the city.

BLOB Open any window without asking permission.

BLOB Take his share of any corn, victuals and other items that come onto the market.

BLOB Speak publicly without anyone telling him to be quiet.
