A teenage girl has been arrested after a gang of youths were spotted throwing items at oncoming traffic.

Police were called to the scene in Vauxhall Road, Canterbury, at 4.10pm yesterday after receiving reports objects were being lobbed at vehicles and that the group was causing a nuisance at a branch of The Range nearby.

When they arrived, officers removed two boys from the store and seized any potential missiles, including cones.

But after being called to reports of a group shouting at shopworkers, a two-day dispersal order was implemented in the area from 7pm that day, giving officers extra powers to move on anyone causing nuisance behaviour.

DS Shelah Thompson said: "We understand the impact anti-social behaviour like this has on local businesses and motorists in the area.

"We are determined to use every tactic open to us to deal with those who cause such problems.

"We are working with partner agencies including Canterbury City Council to make sure the young people involved and their parents are aware of the potential consequences."

A 16-year-old girl was later arrested on suspicion of breaching her bail conditions relating to a previous incident.

She remains in custody while inquiries continue.

The 48-hour dispersal order is the second to be enforced in the area in just the last few days.

The first was brought in on Friday, after officers received reports of youths throwing eggs at cars, damaging commercial premises and causing distress to the public.

Sturry Road's vandal-hit park and ride kiosk has also been closed since the weekend.

Local councillor Louise Harvey-Quirke (Con) says the building was shut by the local authority because youngsters had damaged the site and started fires nearby.

Its closure will be reviewed this week.
