Work on repairs to a gas main which has closed part of a Kent city centre should be completed by early next week.

Part of Castle Street, Canterbury, was shut on Friday for workmen to carry out emergency repairs.

The stretch affected is between Wincheap roundabout and Rosemary Lane and diversions have been set up.

A spokesman for Southern Gas Networks said they first became aware of the problem on Tuesday and began carrying out work on the site.

"We dug up the road and came across an open-ended electrical cable so had to call the electricity board for that to be dealt with," she said.

"We are now finishing the job and hope to have everything completed and all diversions removed by early next week."

kmfm breakfast show presenter Bob Mower said: "I have been driving past that roundabout for the last few mornings and the smell of gas has been really strong. I am surprised it has taken this long to do repairs."
