Graffiti and scaffolding? Welcome to alternative Canterbury!

Sorry, this video asset has been removed.

What's this? Graffiti-daubed subways and run-down buildings listed as among Canterbury's attractions in a new tourist guide?

Using the city council’s slogan Canterbury -Simply Inspirational, it appears to be an authentic publication.

But the clue is in the words "alternative guide" in the top right hand corner of the booklet.

And when the reader flicks through, they discover a tongue-in-cheek look at the grottiest elements of the city.

Professionally produced, the guide is divided into categories including places to stay, eat and drink, art and culture, natural attractions and even the "scaffolding festival 2008".

Under places to stay, it highlights areas where the homeless sleep and under where to eat and drink, it ignores the city’s many fine restaurants but publicises the stalls which sell roasted nuts, hot dogs and ice-creams.

The guide, found by a reader in a city shop who initially though it was genuine, contains dozens of photographs.

There is no hint of who is behind it and an email address, alternativecanterbury@googlemail appears to be shut down.

The city council said it treated the guide as harmless and was not "precious" about the publication pinching its logo.

Spokesman Rob Davies said: “We’ve now seen it and had a bit of a chuckle, because it’s very cleverly done.

“Like all towns and cities, there are some parts of Canterbury that currently aren’t quite as nice as we would like, but the scaffolding actually means that improvements are being made to buildings and our graffiti hit squad works hard to clean up after the vandals.”
