A man has been accused of gambling with his life after hurdling level crossing barriers as a speeding train approached.
Stunned motorists waiting at the gates in Sturry watched as the reckless risk-taker hopped over and crossed the line carrying two suitcases.
British Transport Police is now investigating the incident, which Network Rail has branded "extremely dangerous".
It is thought the man had been rushing to catch the train, which passed through the station without stopping.
With police now investigating, he could face a criminal conviction and a £1,000 fine.
A spokesman for Network Rail said: “We condemn this irresponsible behaviour which is extremely dangerous.
“While we can have the safest possible measures in place at level crossings, we can’t completely remove the risk of accidents if some people are willing to take such a huge gamble with their life.
“While he clearly could have been killed, causing years of grief and anguish for his loved ones, his actions could also have impacted the safe and reliable running of the railway.
“Deliberate misuse of a level crossing is a criminal offence and you could be taken to court and face a £1,000 fine.
"Due to his actions, the British Transport Police are now involved.”
Mark Horwood captured the reckless act on his mobile phone and shared it on the Canterbury Residents Group Facebook page.
He said: “I really can’t believe what we witnessed this morning whilst waiting at the Sturry crossing.
"He put his cases over the barrier as they were in the down position, lights flashing, and proceeded to climb over and make his way across the railway whilst the train was coming in order to catch the Londonbound train - to onlookers’ amazement.
“He got onto the platform and must have felt a right plonker as the train pelted through the station without stopping.
"What an idiot. Can't believe he even did it in front of so many people."
Jenny Cole wrote: "He needs to be prosecuted for endangering lives."
Andy MacLean added: "Its's mind-boggingly stupidly dangerous."
