ILL health has forced comedian and writer Linda Smith out of this year's Canterbury Festival for the third year in a row.

She will be replaced by Radio 4 colleague and fellow comedian Jeremy Hardy, but not until next month, three weeks after the festival ends.

All ticket holders for Saturday's sell out gig at the Gulbenkian Theatre will have the option of transferring their tickets to Mr Hardy's performance on Thursday, November 11.

Alternatively, ticket holders will be given refunds or the chance to book any Gulbenkian event during the festival subject to availability.

Theatre director Dee Ashworth said: "I am sorry the audience has been disappointed.

We wish Linda a speedy recovery and hope that by providing an alternative show, our customers will recognise our concern for their inconvenience."

Marketing manager Frances Moran said: "Linda has obviously suffered some problems with her health for the past few years. The previous cancellations were also as a result of ill health."

Mr Hardy adds the gig to his current UK tour.

The Perrier Award winning comedian is perhaps best known for his live work, Just for Laughs, along with several Radio 4 plays including Just a Minute and I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue.
