Plans to open a new indoor climbing centre in the county have been revealed.
Bosses at climbing firm Chimera, which already has a centre in Tunbridge Wells, are hoping to transform a warehouse unit on the Wincheap Industrial Estate into a hub for ‘bouldering’ in east Kent.
As part of the proposals, which have this month been submitted to Canterbury City Council’s planning team, the unit next to CareCo in Maynard Road would be covered in timber-style cladding.
Having looked at a host of other potential sites across the district, the team at Chimera - fronted by managing director Chris Searle - favoured Wincheap due to its close proximity to the city and public transport links.
If approved, the spacious centre - which would be Canterbury's first indoor climbing venue - will boast a number of varied climbing walls, a training facility and a small shop, and will offer refreshments.
Mr Searle, who kickstarted the business in 2013, said: “Climbing will be at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics so we’re expecting a huge surge in interest - it will become evermore mainstream.
“Canterbury has a big student population so we’re hoping the centre will be particularly attractive for them.
“Bouldering is low-level climbing without ropes. It’s a great alternative to the gym. It’s very intense and you get to solve problems using your physical strength.”
However, the centre will not just cater for more experienced climbers.
Children as young as five will have the chance to try their hand at the sport in restricted areas, with people of all abilities being encouraged to go along and test themselves.
The peak business hours for the climbing wall will be during the evening, after the retail units on the estate have closed.
There are 14 proposed permanent car parking spaces, which will grow to 25 for overflow at the neighbouring business.
Mr Searle added: “It will be a fun, vibrant and modern facility. You can build up incredible strength from climbing.
“We’re hoping this will be welcomed as a great climbing facility in east Kent.”
