Roller skating has cast off its reputation as an 80s throw-back to become the latest craze in east Kent.

The Invicta Artistic Roller Skating Club has seen its membership double over the last six months.

The club, based in Faversham and Herne Bay, now has more than 200 regular skaters, and head coach Keith Marsh reckons that makes it the biggest club in the country.

He said part of the reason is down to the success of TV talent show Dancing on Ice, which has helped attract people to the sport.

“We do exactly the same dances as the ice skaters do, but we can use any sports centre - we don’t need an ice rink," he added.

"And it’s certainly an awful lot warmer. Anybody can give it a go.

"We have youngsters as young as two, but also people in their 40s and 50s learning to skate, so it’s a thing for all the family.”

The squad trains at two schools in Faversham, the Queen Elizabeth School and Abbey School's sports centre, and Herne Bay High.
