A poem about the downfall of the girl who had everything won Canterbury pupil Keely West a runners-up prize in a nationwide competition.
Now Spoilt Little Rich Girl has been published in a book.
Keely, 15, attends Barton Court Grammar School and her poem was one of 37,000 submitted for the Young Writers’ poetry competition for 2007.
Her work has been published in Away With Words - Southern England Volume ll.
Keely said her poem was about a girl who had everything - a happy family, health and money, but who still wanted more.
“The girl didn’t want to spend her money on a designer dress - instead she thought she would be able to steal it,” said Keely.
“But in the end it all backfired, leaving her living on the street. At the end of the poem the girl tells us that she has paid her debt to society and is getting her life back on track, showing she can make her own money and doesn’t need to use other people or steal.”
She added: “The hardest part about writing the poem was finding rhyming endings to the lines and making the whole poem flow. It was hard to keep the story constant and make sense but I enjoyed writing it.”
