A disused block of public toilets in Canterbury has sold for more than twice the guide price at a property auction today.

The loos in Wincheap, which were being flogged off by the city council, had been estimated to sell for between £18,000 and £20,000.

But keen bidding saw the price rise to £43,000 before the hammer came down at the Clive Emson auction at the county showground at Maidstone.

Auctioneer Kevin Gilbert said the purchaser would have to apply to the city council for planning permission for any change of use to commercial or residential.

It is the second block of redundant public toilets sold off at auction by the city council recently.

Last month, Clive Emson also auctioned facilities in St John's Road, Swalecliffe for £51,000, which was again more than twice the guide price.
