Kent's first all-electric cab has been ferrying commuters around Canterbury in a five-week trial with Longley’s.

It is the result of an initiative between the private hire company the Abbott’s Mill Project and Bailey’s Nissan, which has supplied the new Leaf vehicle.

It has been tested around the city - which has 600 licensed taxis and private hire vehicles - to investigate whether green all-electric vehicles are commercially viable in the industry.

It follows alarming studies about Canterbury’s severe air quality problems, with much of the city being designated as an air quality management area.

But potential passengers have to be quick. The trail ends on Thursday.

Longleys director Dave George said: “It’s a really interesting project that we have wanted to launch for some time.

"The technology used in eco-vehicles is improving every year and we wanted to be the first in testing whether they would work for us.

"The impact on the environment is a big factor for us so we’re testing practical alternatives.”
