Canterbury City go on the attack against Bromley Green

A deflected goal late in the game condemned Canterbury City to a 1-0 defeat at Bromley Green in the Kent Intermediate Shield.

Saturday’s tie was just seven minutes from time when a shot from Mark Howells cannoned off a City defender and past the keeper Rob Lindley.

A number of first team players were unavailable for the match and City’s cause was not helped when Dave Read aggravated a hamstring injury in the warm-up and pulled out.

City looked at their strongest before the interval, dominating proceedings and looking solid at the back, thanks to the steadying influence of Luke Lockhart.

Scoring chances remained remote though. Mark Rook’s free-kick came close and Scott Lawford sent Royston Gough away, only for the Green back-line to mop up the danger.

Craig Southern came close with a header from a Lawford free-kick but Green were keeping it tight and did well to contain Royston Gough on the flank.

In the 75th minute Green hit the post and that spurred them on. Lindley had to pull off several good saves but was finally beaten with a deflected shot.

City have a home match this Saturday as they return to Vandanel Kent County League, Premier Division action against Phoenix Sports. Kick-off 2.45pm.
