A lazy litter lout was caught red-handed hurling rubbish out of a car twice in one day - landing the vehicle's owner with fines totalling £300.

In the first instance a front-seat passenger in a Mercedes was captured on dashcam footage chucking a food wrapper out of the window in Sturry Road, Canterbury.

Later in the day, a passenger was caught on camera yet again throwing a takeaway coffee out of the same car in Island Road, Upstreet.

Two fines worth £150 were issued to the car's registered owner by Canterbury City Council for both offences.

The authority says dashcams and mobile phones can be used as evidence if it shows litter coming from the vehicle and the registration, and whoever filmed it has the details of when and where it took place.

They say this incident is just the latest in a number of fines dished out under powers which mean the owner of a vehicle can be fined, whether they are in it or not.

Council leader Rob Thomas branded louts flinging rubbish from car windows as "lazy and selfish", and praised the public for sharing the footage.

He added that while hitting people who litter or allow littering in the pocket is welcome, the money is "nowhere near the amount" taxpayers spend to clear up the mess.
