Canterbury youngster Lucy Hyams skippered a Saxon Tigers under-16s side to victory in the England Hockey Futures Cup.

The competition is designed to give promising under-16 and under-18 players a taste of an international tournament in preparation for potential involvement in a National Age Group Squad (NAGS).

The Tigers topped the table with maximum points after the three-day, round-robin competition at Cannock, Staffordshire, recording wins against Wessex Leopards and Pennine Pumas.

Hyams finished off a set-piece move with a goal as the Saxons brushed aside Pennine Pumas 6-2 in their opening game on Friday, with Ellie Kerly also on the scoresheet.

Hyams scored the winner from a penalty corner in a 2-1 win against Wessex Leopards on Saturday.

She also got the first goal from another penalty corner as Saxons overcame Mercia Lynx 3-1 in their final game of the tournament on Sunday.

Hyams finished as joint-top scorer in the competition.
